School 10

On Friday, June 10, the New Jersey Special Olympics hosted their annual "Law Enforcement Torch Run." The mission of this event is to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.

This year, over 3,000 law enforcement officers took to the streets of their local communities as part of 26 different routes to help carry the "Flame of Hope," covering a distance of over 750 miles throughout the state of New Jersey!

In an effort to help promote this cause, our very own School #10 participated in the event and went above and beyond to do so. Over the weeks leading up to the event, the entire school took part in a "Penny War," as the classes came together to help raise money for the cause. The school ended up raising over $1,000, which was added to the overall donation from the Garfield Police Department.

Officer Noah Murphy, School #10 Principal Jennifer Alfonso, and Teacher Jessica Delahanty pose for a picture with two students as they present the Garfield Police Department with their donation for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Not only did the School #10 community help raise money, but also joined in on the run as well! Our fourth and fifth-grade students proudly ran with our law enforcement team, as they were cheered on by the third-grade students as they passed by the school.

The fun didn't end after the run concluded! In recognition of their efforts, the students were rewarded with a Pizza Party!

Way to go James Madison School #10!

School 9 loves to have Family Event Nights. They decided to change it up this year and have a fun Escape Room. It was an amazing event! They had 45 Families from School 9 competed to complete 8 puzzles and "Escape the Artic!" Families had to work together to use cyphers, build polar bear defense systems, build lookout towers, create a circuit to power a propeller, identify artic animals by sound, save a snow owl, build an igloo from hula hoops and slide like a seal on a scooter through an obstacle course to collect 8 words. The words needed to be organized to create their final escape phrase!  Garfield High School students as well as School 9 staff manned the activities!

Interview and overview with Laura Smith, PE teacher at school #5.
The Kids Heart Challenge is a special event where students raise money to donate to the American Heart Association. Our donations help children who have heart disease. The money goes towards research and tools to help save the lives of these special children.
This event means so much to me personally because I have heart disease in my family. I look forward to this event every year. It is great being a part of a great cause that helps children in need. It also teaches our students the importance of keeping their hearts healthy. They learn to be kind to others, to try and eat heart healthy food, and to exercise daily.
At our event this year, we all recited our very own pledge and made a promise to try and keep our hearts healthy on a daily basis. Also, each grade level performed their own skill using a jump rope. The students were so excited to do this and they worked so hard in physical education class leading up to this event. It was a huge success! School 5 as a whole donated $1,221.75. To the American Heart Association! We are hoping each year to be able to donate more and more to this great cause!

WINTER 4 KIDS is a non-profit organization that gives our youth some wonderful opportunities. The Garfield Middle School had the opportunity to have 75 students be able to attend this program.  They were able to attend 2 out of the 3 sessions. The third session was canceled because the Middle School was not in session due to some flooding issues. However, the first two sessions were amazing! The students had such an incredible time. The learned how to snowboard, Downhill Ski and Cross Country Ski. The students were split into groups and each group did something different each week. Upon arrival the students were fed a healthy and organic breakfast which was very tasty. The students were also given a healthy lunch. Winter 4 Kids makes sure they are food allergy ready as well. Overall, it was an amazing experience!!! You can check their website out here: https://winter4kids.org click on blog post title to see pictures
